About the song

“Let It Be Me” is a timeless classic that has captured the hearts of music lovers for generations. Originally released in 1960 by The Everly Brothers, this beautiful ballad is an English-language cover of the French song “Je t’appartiens”, which was written by Gilbert Bécaud and Pierre Delanoë in 1955. The song’s origins are rooted in a poignant apology, with Delanoë penning the lyrics as a gesture of regret for missing one of Bécaud’s performances at the iconic Olympia in Paris.

The song’s French version, sung by Bécaud, was released as a single by His Master’s Voice in 1955, and it quickly gained popularity in France. Years later, producer Archie Bleyer recommended the song to The Everly Brothers, and they decided to record their own version. The brothers’ rendition of “Let It Be Me” was recorded in December 1959 in New York, featuring a talented group of musicians, including guitarists Howard Collins, Barry Galbraith, and Mundell Lowe, bassist Lloyd Trotman, pianist Hank Rowland, and drummer Jerry Allison.

The song was released as a single by Cadence Records in 1960, with “Since You Broke My Heart” as the B-side. The Everly Brothers’ version of “Let It Be Me” was a top ten hit in the United States, and it has since become one of their most beloved and enduring songs. The song’s success can be attributed to the brothers’ signature harmonies, which blend seamlessly with the song’s soaring melody and heartfelt lyrics. “Let It Be Me” is a testament to the power of music to transcend language and cultural boundaries, and its beauty and emotion continue to captivate audiences to this day.

Lyrics

I bless the day I found you
I want to stay around you
And so I beg you, let it be me
Don’t take this Heaven from one
If you must cling to someone
Now and forever, let it be me
Each time we meet, love
I find complete love
Without your sweet love
What would life be?
So never leave me lonely
Tell me you love me only
And that you’ll always, let it be me
Each time we meet love
I find complete love
Without your sweet love
What would life be?
So never leave me lonely
Tell me you love me only
And that you’ll always let it be me
